NHRA membership and grassroots reach
The NHRA History page describes an organization with a large membership base and a substantial licensed-competitor population. It reported 50,000 members and more than 35,000 licensed competitors. Those are organization-wide figures stated on the page without a measurement date, so they should be read as the NHRA’s current-as-stated figures rather than as a dated 2026 census. The same page reported more than 200 dedicated employees.
The grassroots footprint was also measured in tracks and regions. NHRA reported 120 member tracks across North America, with the network spanning seven geographic regions. A member-track count indicates the breadth of places where organized drag racing is connected to the NHRA system, while the licensed-competitor count captures people rather than facilities. They are different participation units and should not be added together.
NHRA also described its Mission Foods Series schedule as 24 stops in 21 cities across 10 months. That schedule measurement describes event reach and calendar distribution, not the number of unique racers. A competitor may appear at more than one stop, and a single stop can contain multiple categories.
Youth participation is represented by the NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League, which serves ages 5 to 17. Across the broader competition structure, NHRA offered more than 20 competition categories. Together, the age range and category count show that participation is not limited to the headline professional classes: it includes youth programs, Sportsman racing and multiple forms of adult competition.

The 2024 Lucas Oil Sportsman program
The 2024 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule included 45 divisional events, 22 regional events and 11 doubleheader events. These are scheduled event counts for the 2024 season, not counts of unique entrants or completed starts. A doubleheader can create two competition opportunities within one event weekend, so the schedule figures describe the program’s structure rather than a headcount.
The Sportsman program also had a clear national-scale participation marker in the 2023 JEGS SPORTSnationals. More than 600 competitors took part, and the competition ran in eight categories. “Competitors” and “categories” describe different dimensions: the first is a participation count, while the second is the number of classes represented.
The 2024 Lucas Oil regional program included Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car racing at 270 mph. That speed figure is not a participation count, but it identifies the performance level available within the regional program. NHRA’s 2024 free Lucas Oil divisional-stream coverage included all seven NHRA divisions, another measure of the program’s breadth.

The scale of the 2023 U.S. Nationals
The 2023 NHRA U.S. Nationals provides one of the clearest event-level pictures of drag racing participation. The event had six days of racing, with more than 200 full- and part-time employees assigned to it. More than 800 race teams were parked for the event, and the Youth & Education Service program was scheduled to welcome more than 2,000 local high-school students.
The competition footprint was similarly large. The event produced nearly 70 combined hours of quarter-mile racing and nearly 4,500 competition passes. Its competition schedule covered 16 categories. These measurements describe duration, racing activity and class breadth; they are not interchangeable with the race-team count.
The published by-the-numbers summary recorded 835 entries and 4,324 competition passes. The two pass figures are both retained because one is a rounded event description and the other is the published summary count. The rounded “nearly 4,500” communicates scale, while 4,324 is the specific summary figure.

Entries, race teams and competition passes represent different units. A team can support a car through multiple rounds, and a competition pass is an on-track run rather than a unique person. The figures therefore show event activity without implying that 835 entries equal 835 unique competitors.

2024 national-event entry fields
The 2024 Gatornationals coverage described the Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series as a 21-event series. At the March 2024 Gatornationals, more than 500 total entries were on the property. Final eliminations were reduced to 14 individual champions, according to NHRA’s event coverage.
The event included seven named professional or specialty categories before the nine Sportsman categories: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Motorcycle, Pro Mod, Factory Stock and Sportsman racing. It also included nine separate NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Sportsman categories. Those category counts show how a single national event combines professional, specialty and Sportsman participation.
Individual class fields provide more detail. The Gatornationals Pro Stock field had 23 entries on the property. The first 2024 Pro Mod event at the Gatornationals attracted 26 entries, while the opening Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying session had a 16-bike field.

The Gatornationals figures are event-specific. “Entries on the property,” “entries in a class,” “bikes” and “individual champions” measure different stages or units of participation and should not be combined into one total.

Professional fields across the 2024 season
Other 2024 national events show how professional fields varied by venue and class. The Pomona Winternationals had 21 Funny Car entries and a 17-car Top Fuel entry list. NHRA described the 21-car Funny Car field as the largest for that event since 2014. More than 40 nitro cars were scheduled for the Pomona weekend.
At the Route 66 Nationals in May 2024, 22 Top Fuel dragsters and 18 Funny Cars were competing. NHRA reported 40 Top Fuel and Funny Car nitro competitors combined, along with 79 professional entries across the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. The coverage identified Route 66 as the sixth of 20 races at that point in the season. This season-position figure is the position stated in that article; it is distinct from the Gatornationals coverage describing the full 2024 series as 21 events.
The fall Las Vegas NHRA Nationals entry list had 20 Top Fuel dragsters and 21 Funny Cars, for 41 combined nitro entries. The venue-specific field counts show that professional participation can shift from one event to another while remaining concentrated in a small number of headline classes.

These are published event-field measurements, not season totals. The same team or driver may appear at multiple events, and “professional entries” is broader than the Top Fuel and Funny Car counts cited for the Route 66 event.

Specialty classes and emerging participation
Specialty classes add another layer to participation statistics. The 2024 NHRA Pro Mod season was scheduled for 10 races. Its Arizona Nationals debut in April had 20 entries, giving the class a measurable starting field within its 2024 schedule.
Factory X moved from exhibitions into a national-event program. The inaugural 2024 NHRA Factory X national event had eight entries, and the 2024 Factory X calendar opened with eight events. Before that national-event debut, Factory X held four exhibition events in 2023. At the 2023 U.S. Nationals exhibition, the official field had four entries, described also as four competitors.
The Legends Nitro Series measurement comes from a later event. At the 2025 U.S. Nationals, the series used an eight-car competitor ladder during August–September 2025. That figure should not be treated as a 2024 participation count, but it shows the continued presence of a defined specialty field in the later U.S. Nationals program.
The 2024 Route 66 Nationals also included an eight-car Drag and Drive exhibition. Like the Factory X and Legends Nitro figures, it represents a particular class or exhibition field rather than a count of all participants at the event.
