This mishap occurred during the 1973 IHRA Winter Nationals in Lakeland, Florida.

As told in the June, 1973 issue of Drag Racing USA magazine:

"The machines of Ray Godman and Jim Shores collided after the "Fireball Vega" hooked a hard right in front of Davis due to a broken spindle.  Both suffered extensive front end damage."

The text accompanying this photo read as follows:

" 'Fireball' Vega left hard, but broke a front end spindle, and swerved right into the charging "Bo-Weevil", turning it around and into the guardrail.  Both were out of the Lakeland show, but no injuries."
