Wood Wins Match,
 Sets SCIR Mark

Bobby Wood, of Birmingham, bettered the Shelby County International Raceway quarter mile record before a crowd of 1,500 last night.

Wood, piloting a 1969 Chevy II, turned an elapse time of :07.51 on his first battle with New Orleans' Leonard Hughes in their best-of-three Funny Car match.  Wood also won the second match with an elapse time of :07.61 at 191.08 miles per hour.

Hughes had a faster speed with a 202.70 clocking, but red-lighted on the first round and had trouble getting off the line in the second test.
